What can java do for you?
Return to knowledge base directory

In the beginning, the internet was populated with flat and lifeless text documents. HTML allowed the text documents to be laid out attractively with static images and colour. Server-side languages such as perl, followed by ASP, CFML, JSP and PHP, introduced web pages which were dynamically generated on the server for each visitor, and which could accept and process form submissions. Flash, animations and other media slowly turned web pages into something more approximating to a TV screen or movie experience.

What's left is the depth of interactivity and complexity of information management offered by complex computer programmes. Quite simply, java can turn your flat web page into the interface of a fully functional computer programme of any description, be it a file manager like the Window's Explorer, a game, a database interface, or anything else a computer programme can do.

Client-side java or applets are most widely used for ticker and animation effects. This is a considerable under-use the potential of java. A navigation system exploits the potential of java somewhat more. Suppose you have a web site with several thousand pages, and you have a sidebar just 120 pixels wide and 300 pixels high to devote to navigation. The only technology that can properly provide a solution with high-performance user-friendly management of presentation and access to your pages is java. A navigation applet may look cute and small when you first look at it, but if it's a good one, it contains possibly the most valuable functionality you will ever add to your web site or intranet.
